About Us

There has been a veterinary surgery in Pontefract since at least the end of the nineteenth century. In those days, vets dealt mainly with livestock and horses, and the premises were situated near to the old cattle market in Friarwood.

In the 1960s, J.G. Prescott, who purchased Ashleigh House (our main consulting building at the Pontefract site), founded the present practice. Several years later, the stables across the car park were converted, the practice re-located, and Ashleigh House was sold to a firm of architects. As the practice expanded, more space was needed and, when, in 2002, Ashleigh House came back on the market the practice was able to operate from both sites. Shortly after, we decided to concentrate our efforts purely on small animal work, saying goodbye to our equine and farm patients.

In 2008 we also felt our premises on Sagar Street in Castleford had become too cramped. A search for a more spacious home was started, and shortly afterward, we purchased part of the old government buildings on Bradley Street. Initially a derelict shell, we were able to purpose-build an interior, giving us over 200 square metres of space, incorporating more consulting rooms, operating theatres, inpatient kennelling, and a spacious waiting room. A wheelchair lift and automatic door make the building fully wheelchair accessible.

As a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Approved Practice, we adhere strictly to the guidelines issued by our governing body. Only qualified and registered staff are allowed to medicate or administer treatments to our patients. All of our veterinary surgeons are fully qualified and registered with the RCVS, and all of our qualified and trainee veterinary nurses are also RCVS registered.
